Why Northern Yoruba Monarchs Urge Ooni of Ife to Maintain Connection

Traditional rulers from the northern Yoruba regions have appealed to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to continue supporting them in preserving their cultural identity and dignity.
During a visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, the monarchs, primarily from Kwara and Kogi States in North Central Nigeria, requested his assistance to maintain their link with their ancestral heritage.
A statement from the Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, indicated that the visit was led by the Obaro of Kabba, Oba Dele Owoniyi.
Oba Owoniyi remarked, “Kabiyesi, we face significant development challenges in our regions, but with your influence, we believe these issues can be addressed. Our allegiance to the Oduduwa throne remains steadfast.”
Echoing this sentiment, the Elulu of Mopa, Oba Muyiwa Ibeun, expressed gratitude and respect for the Ooni, saying, “This visit is a way for us to honor Your Imperial Majesty and acknowledge the respect you have shown to our traditional institutions.”
The Elejuku of Ejuku in Kogi State highlighted the challenges faced by those of Oduduwa’s lineage in the northern regions, stating, “We are tired of being considered lesser Yoruba due to our location. We urge you to use your influence to reunite us with our kinsmen and rectify this misperception.”
Supporting this view, Oba Solomon Oloyede, the Olusin of Isin in Kwara State, emphasized the importance of the Ooni’s ongoing support to ensure that all descendants of Oduduwa are recognized and valued.
In response, Oba Ogunwusi assured the monarchs that their southwestern kinsmen recognize and appreciate their efforts.
