Wike Blasts Defecting Governors, Says ‘You Failed the Leadership Test’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has launched a blistering attack on governors who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of abandoning responsibility at a critical moment for the opposition party.

Speaking at the PDP’s 2026 national convention in Abuja, Wike said the wave of defections reflects a deeper problem of weak leadership among those who exited the party. The convention, attended by delegates aligned with the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led faction, served as a platform for the minister to rally loyalists and redefine the party’s direction.

“Leadership is not an easy task. It demands courage, firmness and commitment,” Wike said, according to TheCable. “Those who left only showed they lack the capacity to stand firm when it matters most.”

The former Rivers State governor argued that political leadership should be tested during periods of crisis, not stability. He likened party loyalty to family responsibility, insisting that true leaders confront challenges rather than walk away from them.

Drawing parallels beyond the PDP, Wike also referenced the political trajectory of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, suggesting that leaders who fail to manage internal disputes cannot be trusted with broader responsibilities. Premium Times noted that the remark underscores widening tensions across opposition ranks ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a pointed message to defectors, Wike vowed that the party would work to reclaim what he described as its lost political ground. “This is the time to show your report card. Those who took our mandate — we will take it back,” he declared, urging party structures across key states to regroup and reassert their influence.

The recent defections have significantly altered the PDP’s political landscape, with several governors moving to rival platforms, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The shift has left the party with a reduced number of sitting governors, intensifying concerns about its strength ahead of future elections.

Despite the setbacks, Wike struck an optimistic tone, portraying the convention as the beginning of a rebuilding phase. He credited grassroots members for keeping the party alive through internal turbulence, describing them as the backbone of its survival.

“While some chose to leave, those at the grassroots stayed and believed in the party. That is why we are still standing today,” he said.

He also extended an olive branch to former members, calling for unity and inclusiveness as the PDP seeks to reposition itself. According to Channels Television, Wike emphasised that rebuilding the party would require collective effort and renewed commitment to its founding ideals.

“The future of this party must be built on unity and inclusiveness. Everyone has a role to play,” he added.

With political realignments already shaping the road to 2027, Wike’s remarks highlight both the depth of the PDP’s internal divisions and the determination of one faction to reclaim relevance in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
