Wike: People Assume My Role as FCT Minister Is Just About Allocating Land
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, has clarified that his appointment was not solely about distributing land in Abuja.
During a meeting in Abuja with a delegation from AMCON led by Managing Director Gbenga Alade, Wike addressed misconceptions about his responsibilities. He emphasized that there are significant challenges facing AMCON that require difficult decisions.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Wike acknowledged the difficulties of his role as FCT Minister but expressed his commitment to achieving success. He lamented that government actions are often interpreted through ethnic and religious lenses, highlighting that effective leadership sometimes necessitates making unpopular choices.
“We have serious issues in land administration, which is where corruption often arises. Many believe that being appointed as FCT Minister means simply sharing land,” he explained.
“People assume that my job revolves entirely around land allocation—nothing else, such as infrastructure, education, or health. When you try to implement changes, it can lead to backlash, and people may label you unfairly. We cannot continue in this manner; true leadership involves tackling difficult issues head-on.”
