Wike Supports Okpebholo, Says Peter Obi Must Informed Okpebholo Before Visiting Rivers as Governor

Wike Supports Okpebholo, Says Peter Obi Must Informed Okpebholo Before Visiting Rivers as Governor

Former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has weighed in on recent discussions surrounding political courtesy and protocol, expressing strong support for Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo. Wike recounted how, during his tenure, then-presidential candidate Peter Obi gave him prior notice before visiting Rivers State—something Wike says was both respectful and necessary.

“I’ve seen people stirring up unnecessary arguments on TV lately. Nigerians often forget history,” Wike said during a public address. “When Peter Obi planned a visit to Rivers during my time as governor, he informed me in advance. I made logistics available—vehicles, security—because at that level, anything can happen. And if it does, the state governor gets blamed.”

Wike explained that notifying a sitting governor is not about seeking permission but about responsibility and safety. “When you’re part of a coalition, and you know tensions can rise, you inform the governor so that everyone is protected. Governor Okpebholo was right in what he said—he didn’t stop anyone from visiting Edo; he simply asked for communication,” Wike added.

He criticized certain public figures and political elites for manipulating public opinion and pretending to act humble for the cameras. “Some people want to play to the gallery—carrying trays, serving food, making theatrical gestures to win over Nigerians. But leadership isn’t a show. As president, you won’t be flying commercial planes or handing out food at rallies. Let’s be honest.”

Wike argued that many Nigerians are drawn to populist displays rather than substance. “They want to be entertained, not told the truth. But we need leaders who deal with reality, not stage-managed humility.”

He urged Governor Okpebholo to remain steadfast. “Governor, stand your ground. You don’t owe anyone apologies for doing your job. If they’re talking about you, it means you’re making an impact. Even I wake up every day expecting my name to be in the news—it’s part of the job.”

Wike closed by encouraging unity and support for Governor Okpebholo, acknowledging the presence of prominent figures like Adams Oshiomhole and former Deputy Governors. “Your Speaker has said it—if you need more resources, come forward. You’ve got the backing of your people, and that’s what truly matters.”
