YAHOO ACADEMY: Police Discover Internet Fraud Academy in Benue
In Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, authorities have uncovered an internet fraud academy. The revelation came from Hassan Yabanet, the state Commissioner of Police, who announced the arrest of 35 individuals for various crimes during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Yabanet explained that a team of detectives was assigned to investigate the alleged fraud academy located on Jerome Hwande Street in Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi. “This so-called fraud academy, where internet fraudsters operate, was pinpointed at Jerome Hwande Street, Ankpa Quarters, Makurdi,” he stated.
On May 14, 2024, at approximately 6:00 AM, detectives apprehended several suspects at the location, including Terpase Luke Denmodi, 23, and Avalumun Ayangekaa Dominic, 24. Items seized from the scene included seven HP laptops, one Apple notebook, a Canon printer, 15 Ghanaian cedi notes, two international passports, and various articles of clothing.
Further investigations revealed that these suspected fraudsters utilized multiple social media accounts to scam individuals out of their money. Alongside the internet fraudsters, the police also arrested and paraded individuals suspected of kidnapping, cultism and armed robbery
Yabanet warned landlords and hoteliers to be mindful of the kind of people they accommodate, saying that they are also at risk of becoming victims and can be prosecuted for criminal conspiracy.
