You Can’t Contest For President Under PDP In 2027, Bode George Tells Atiku

Bode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar should wait until 2031 if he wishes to run for President again. George emphasized that from 2023 to 2031, the presidency should be held by a southerner, in line with the PDP’s constitution and the current political climate in Nigeria.
Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, lost to President Bola Tinubu. George highlighted that by 2027, Abubakar will be 81 years old and should consider stepping aside to allow younger candidates to take the lead, similar to President Joe Biden’s approach of making way for newer leadership.
George, who himself will be in his 80s by 2027, argued that the principles of fairness and equity as outlined in the PDP Constitution should guide the party’s decisions. He referred to Section 7, Sub-section 3 (C) of the PDP Constitution, which emphasizes the importance of zoning and rotation.
George expressed that despite his personal respect for Abubakar, it is crucial for the party to adhere to these principles. He also addressed accusations of tribalism, asserting his commitment to fairness and his long-standing dedication to the PDP since 1998.
He concluded by urging the party to adhere strictly to its zoning principles and to select a southerner for the 2027 presidential race, in order to offer a viable alternative to the ruling APC and address the country’s challenges.
