NERC Advises Nigerians: Do Not Pay for Transformers or Cables

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against paying for electricity distribution infrastructure, including transformers, cables, and poles.
In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, accompanied by a video, NERC underscored that consumers should not be burdened with the costs of such equipment. This responsibility, NERC clarified, belongs solely to the electricity distribution companies.
The statement read, “Is your distribution company asking you to buy transformers, cables, or poles? Don’t! It is the DisCo’s obligation, not yours!” This firm stance by NERC aims to protect consumers from undue expenses.
NERC also urged consumers to report any instances of coercion or delays in the provision of necessary materials by the distribution companies. The statement continued, “Report any coercion to purchase, or delays in providing these materials to NERC for prompt action.”
To support this initiative, NERC assured the public of quick responses to such complaints and provided a dedicated email and phone number for reporting issues related to network investments.
