150 Armed Men on Motorcycles Attack Kano Border Villages, Forcing Residents to Flee

Communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State are gripped by fear after a large group of armed bandits raided the area earlier this week. Witnesses said the assailants, numbering about 150, arrived on roughly 50 motorcycles—three men to a bike—leaving behind death and destruction.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the attackers are suspected to have crossed into Kano from neighbouring Katsina State. During the invasion, several people were killed, while livestock and valuable farming equipment were carted away, throwing residents into panic.
Border villages such as Faruruwa, Kuraku, Goron-Dutse, Tsaure, and Yan-Shado have faced repeated assaults in recent weeks. Locals say the gunmen often sneak in through bush paths, looting homes and kidnapping residents with little resistance.
Farmers and traditional leaders lament that the continuous attacks have crippled both farming and trade, forcing many to abandon their homes.
Yahaya Bagobiri, Chairman of the Faruruwa and Neighbourhood Security Committee, described the security situation as dire. He explained that the few security personnel posted to the area are vastly outnumbered and unable to repel the frequent raids.
“We’ve been under siege since 2022,” Bagobiri told reporters. “These bandits come from Katsina and other neighbouring states almost every day. We urgently need the government’s intervention.”
He revealed that the assaults have claimed many lives and displaced hundreds of residents. In addition, more than 1,600 cows, numerous motorcycles, and several farming machines have been stolen in the attacks.
“Just two days ago, about 150 gunmen stormed our community on 50 motorcycles. They killed people and looted our livestock,” he said.
Bagobiri also criticized the limited manpower of the Joint Task Force (JTF) stationed in the area, noting that fewer than 15 officers are deployed to cover the entire volatile zone.
Residents are now appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to bolster security presence in Shanono and other border settlements to prevent further loss of lives and property.
“How can 10 or 15 security men face over 150 heavily armed attackers?” Bagobiri asked.
He added that both the Kano State Commissioner of Police and a senior Army Commander had recently visited the community to assess the situation, yet the assaults have continued unabated.
In one tragic case, Bagobiri said a resident, Alhaji Haruna Gatali, paid a ransom of ₦15 million to free his kidnapped wife.
“We can only plead with the authorities to act swiftly and restore peace to our
communities,” he concluded.
