2027: NNPP Signals Presidential Alliance with ADC as Kwankwaso Finalises Defection

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has indicated plans to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 presidential election, in a move that underscores ongoing efforts among opposition figures to consolidate forces ahead of the next general polls.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’sThe Morning Brief, noting that while the NNPP would continue to field candidates across various levels, it would collaborate with the ADC at the presidential level.
“The NNPP will remain in the race,” Johnson said, according to Channels TV. “However, at the presidential level and possibly some national contests, we will work in alignment with the ADC, while still maintaining our presence down the ballot.”
The development comes on the heels of the anticipated defection of the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is set to formally join the ADC following weeks of consultations with political allies and stakeholders.
Johnson downplayed concerns that Kwankwaso’s exit could weaken the NNPP, insisting the party remains politically relevant and committed to contesting future elections. He explained that the emerging alliance reflects a broader strategy among opposition leaders to present a unified front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Political watchers say the move aligns with ongoing coalition talks among key opposition figures. As reported by The Punch, Kwankwaso has recently held a series of high-level meetings with prominent politicians, including ADC leaders, Peter Obi, Governor Seyi Makinde, and Senator Seriake Dickson, in what appears to be a coordinated effort to build a formidable alliance.
Sources within the NNPP also confirmed that the former Kano State governor had engaged extensively with leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement before arriving at his decision, securing grassroots backing ahead of his planned transition to the ADC.
The unfolding political realignment is taking place against the backdrop of internal tensions within the NNPP, particularly in Kano State. The recent defection of Governor Abba Yusuf and several political figures to the APC has deepened divisions within the party, with Kwankwaso openly criticising the move and describing it as a betrayal, a position widely reported by Daily Trust.
Observers believe the NNPP-ADC alignment could reshape the opposition landscape, especially if it evolves into a broader coalition involving other major political actors. With consultations ongoing, the coming months are expected to define the structure and strength of the alliance as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
