Angry Crowd Storms Ogoja Police Station Over Murder Suspect in Cross River

Residents of Nwang I and II communities, along with other parts of the Ekajuk Clan in Ogoja Local Government Area, Cross River State, clashed with police on Monday after demanding the release of a murder suspect, PUNCH Metro reports.
The suspect, 35-year-old Malime Sunday Ejor, was arrested for allegedly killing his 26-year-old girlfriend, Moshie Lucy Igu, at a farm in Nwang Village on Saturday. According to the Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Sunday Etiokpah, the suspect reportedly attacked the victim before dragging her to a nearby stream and inflicting fatal machete wounds.
“Upon receiving the report, police operatives promptly visited the scene. The suspect was apprehended and rescued from an attempted mob action by angry youths. He is currently in police custody for his safety and ongoing investigation,” Etiokpah said in a statement.
Tensions escalated when hundreds of protesters stormed the Ogoja Area Command, insisting on Ejor’s release. The crowd reportedly became violent, assaulting officers and vandalising property, including a Hyundai vehicle and parts of the Rapid Response Squad building. Smoke canisters were deployed to restore order, and eight individuals were initially arrested before being released to a community leader to help calm tensions (Vanguard News).
The police later confirmed that Ejor had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Calabar for further investigation. Etiokpah appealed to residents to remain calm and assured the public that justice would be served.
“The victim’s remains are yet to be deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Ogoja as arrangements are being finalised. We urge residents to allow the law to take its course,” he added, according to reports by The Nation.
This incident highlights the fragile relationship between security forces and local communities, as well as the urgent need for public awareness on lawful procedures in criminal investigations.
