Breaking: Two young men were mistakenly killed by a policeman’s stray bullet in Ekiti State.
Witnesses reported that the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Tuesday in the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti.
According to reports, there was an accident, and in the process of dispersing the gathered youths, a police officer’s gun accidentally discharged, hitting two young men.
Despite being rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, both victims succumbed to their injuries. Their bodies have been placed in the morgue.
DSP Sunday Abutu, the spokesperson for the Ekiti State Police Command, confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway.
Abutu stated: “Upon receiving the information, the Command deployed the State Traffic Section to the scene to maintain order and ensure the safety of the victims.
“Upon arrival, the officers encountered resistance from some angry youths who prevented them from performing their duties and threatened jungle justice. This led to a call for reinforcement.
“During the process, one of the officers accidentally fired a shot, fatally wounding two people.
“The officer involved has been disarmed, arrested, and detained, and will face disciplinary action immediately.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Akinwale Kunle Adeniran, extends his condolences to the families of the deceased and assures them that a detailed investigation has begun to ensure justice is served.”
