NNPC to Launch Six New CNG Stations Nationwide____Kyari
Mallam Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited, has announced plans to establish six new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother and service stations across Nigeria.
Kyari shared this update during the commissioning of a 5.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) plant in the Isolo Industrial Area, Ilasamaja, Lagos, on Thursday.
The NNPC has finalized an investment decision with Axxela Limited to construct these CNG stations, each with a 5.2 mmscfd capacity, in various strategic locations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative aims to enhance access to bulk CNG and strengthen energy security for the nation.
“NNPC is committed to implementing strategic projects that benefit our country. We will leverage our gas resources to drive industrialization, power generation, and economic growth,” Kyari emphasized.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, who inaugurated the plant, highlighted the event as a pivotal moment in the pursuit of affordable, sustainable, and secure energy sources in Nigeria. He noted that 2024 marks a significant year for Nigerians, citing President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to end fuel subsidies and promote the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) as transformative steps.
“While the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy has posed challenges, it also presents a unique opportunity to explore and adopt more economical, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions,” Ekpo stated. He further explained that CNG is a globally recognized, mature technology for transportation, being the cleanest burning fuel regarding nitrogen oxide and soot emissions. CNG-powered passenger vehicles emit 5-10% less CO2 than gasoline-powered equivalents.
In his goodwill message, Engineer Michael Oluwagbemi, Chief Executive of the Presidential CNG Initiative, praised the commissioning of the plant as a reflection of President Tinubu’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions for Nigeria.
