A Kano State Shari’a Court has remanded Nura Musbahu and his fiancée, Fatima Lawal, for stealing a kayan lefe (wedding present) from his sister, Aisha.

According to the Daily Post, Kayan lefe is a Hausa ceremony in which a man buys lavish gifts for his bride and has his family formally offer them to her.

Aisha hauled the love birds to court in Rijiyar Lemo, Fagge LGA, where they were accused of stealing and accepting stolen property.

Musbahu pleaded guilty after being read the charges by court officer Usman Idris Shu’aibu Dala.

However, his fiancée admitted that she only received two items, which she handed to the court.

Khadi Danbaba then ordered their remand to a penal facility until June 5, 2024, and directed that their parents appear before the court.

Meanwhile, a couple who sexually assaulted their 18-year-old niece was placed under detention at a correctional facility by an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

James Uwanah, 31, and Michelle Uwanah, 26, were detained at Kikiri Correctional Centre by Magistrate E. Kubeinje until their trial on June 25.

The pair faces accusations of sexual assault and conspiracy, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

The defendants are accused of committing the crime on May 5 and 6, at No. 42, Oje Olorunfemi St., in the Igando neighbourhood of Lagos, according to the prosecutor, Insp. John Iberedem, who addressed the court.

Iberedem claimed that the man’s 18-year-old niece, who lived with them, was sexually abused by the couple.

Sections 261, 263(1), and 411 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Laws were allegedly violated, according to the prosecution.

While sexual assault by penetration carries a life sentence if found guilty, sexual assault is punishable by a three-year jail sentence.

In a related report, Emenike Agugwo, 34, was detained in a correctional facility by an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl. Agugwo, who lives in Agodo, Ikotun, Lagos, has been charged with defilement.

The prosecutor, Insp John Iberedem, informed the court that the suspect committed the crime at around 7:30 p.m. on April 4 on Okesanya Street, Papa-Ajao, Lagos Barcha, Lagos.

Iberedem said that the suspect had sexual contact with the victim without her consent.

The prosecution stated that the offence violated Section 137 of Lagos State’s Criminal Law, 2015.

Agugwos’ petition was rejected by Chief Magistrate Mrs E. Kubeinje, who instead directed that he be held in a penitentiary facility.

To receive guidance from the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, she postponed the case until June 26.

Similarly, the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has arrested one Abraham Achibong for allegedly having a sexual relationship with his eight-year-old daughter at the Ile-Oluji community, in the Ile-Oluji Oke Igbo Local Government Area of the state.

Ondo command’s Public Relations Officer, Aidamenbor Daniel, on Friday said, Achibong was arrested alongside other suspects – Ojo Oluwasola, and Agu Matthew.

The statement noted that the state commandant of the corps, Ibiloye Oluyemi, had paraded the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.
