The Lagos State Police Command has detained a 32-year-old woman named Funmi Faith on charges of child maltreatment.

The arrest was confirmed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, through a statement released on Wednesday.

The situation came to public attention after a video was posted on social media, calling for intervention to help a female child subjected to abuse.

The video, which featured a voice condemning the treatment as “dehumanizing,” urged the Lagos State government to take action. The voice in the video stated, “Mummy Mariam, this behavior is unacceptable and dehumanizing. You cannot treat this girl in such a manner. I am sending this video to the Lagos State government; this treatment is dehumanizing.”

SP Hundeyin reported that Faith was apprehended by officers from the Oke-odo Division on Tuesday.

The child involved has been taken into the custody of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development to ensure her proper care and shelter.

The statement included, “The woman seen in the now-viral video mistreating a female child, 32-year-old Funmi Faith, has been taken into custody. She was detained by officers from the Oke-odo Division on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The child has been placed under the care of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for appropriate care and shelter.”
