NLC Criticizes SGF Over Treason Allegations and explain that he is a Slave Master
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), for accusing organized labor of “treasonable felony” and “economic sabotage” due to their nationwide strike on Monday.Â
According to a statement from Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Akume’s remarks reveal his character. The NLC argues that true treason and economic sabotage come from those embezzling public funds and misusing national resources.
The union also rebuked Akume for claiming he couldn’t afford to pay his four drivers a ₦100,000 minimum wage, suggesting this exposes him as a “slave master.” The NLC demands Akume retract his statement and insists on advocating for Nigerian workers’ rights and welfare.
Full NLC Statement
The NLC expressed its profound disappointment and condemnation of the SGF’s comments regarding the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) strike. The NLC insists that their actions are legitimate and constitutionally protected, and Akume’s accusations hinder constructive dialogue.
The NLC’s demands include:
– Finalizing and enacting a new national minimum wage reflecting the current cost of living.
– Reversing the electricity tariff hike to ₦65/kWh.
– Ending the discriminatory classification of electricity consumers into bands.
The NLC contends that those truly guilty of treason and economic sabotage are those embezzling public funds, inflating budgets, and engaging in other corrupt practices. They criticize Akume for trivializing the real grievances of Nigerian workers and for his disconnect from the economic realities faced by ordinary citizens.
The union calls on Akume to retract his statements and approach negotiations with seriousness and respect. The NLC reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and insists on resolving issues through genuine dialogue. They stand firm in their demands and refuse to be swayed by what they see as blackmail by the SGF or any other official.
