How Multiple Women Come Forward with Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Ministry Permanent Secretary, Ibrahim Lamuwa

The ongoing controversy surrounding Ambassador Ibrahim Lamuwa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has intensified with new allegations surfacing.

Recently, Simisola Fajemirokun-Ajayi, an aide to the minister, accused Lamuwa of sexual harassment, prompting the Minister to request an investigation by Folasade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil Service. Following these allegations, Lamuwa was suspended and a panel was formed to investigate.

According to PRNigeria, at least three additional women have approached the panel with similar allegations against Lamuwa. Additionally, the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), the ministry’s labor union, has leveled further accusations against Lamuwa, including claims of high-handedness, maladministration, favoritism, and financial improprieties, which they say have adversely affected worker welfare and rights.

In a petition dated June 11, 2024, and addressed to Minister Ambassador Tuggar, the JNC accused Lamuwa of neglecting staff welfare, allowances, and training. They detailed a series of benefits denied to workers, contributing to widespread discontent.

The union’s petition highlighted several grievances, including delays in benefit payments, promotion and conversion delays, lack of transparency in postings, and unfair distribution of benefits like Hajj seats. It also cited issues such as poor sanitation, inadequate work tools, and dilapidated office buildings. The petition was signed by JNC Chairman Comrade Ali Seidu and Assistant General Secretary Comrade Akpana S.E.

The JNC urged the Minister to address these grievances to avoid drastic action by the workers. They condemned the alleged victimization and intimidation tactics used against those who spoke out.

In response, the Minister called for calm and assured that the grievances would be investigated.
