See The Numbers of People Killed and Injured in the Plane Crash Funeral vehicle for Malawi’s VP
A vehicle in the funeral convoy for the late Malawian Vice President, Saulos Chilima, tragically killed four mourners and injured at least 12 others.
The accident occurred on Sunday night in the Ntcheu community, central Malawi, as the convoy was transporting the remains of the late Vice President. Thousands of mourners had gathered along the streets to pay their respects when the vehicle lost control and struck the crowd.
Malawian police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday morning. “Due to the impact, two female and two male pedestrians sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures and died while receiving treatment,” the police statement said.
Last week, a military aircraft carrying Vice President Chilima and other top government officials went missing after failing to land. After an intensive search, the wreckage was found with no survivors.
The Vice President and the nine others on board were en route to the funeral of a prominent Malawian lawyer, former Attorney General, and Justice Minister, Ralph Kasambala, in Mzuzu when the plane crashed.
