How NDLEA recovers 3.33 tonnes of cannabis, others in Ogun State

NDLEA Seizes Drugs in Ogun State, Arrests Suspects

The Ogun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced significant seizures of illicit substances from January to May this year. According to the state commander, Tijjani Rabe, the command recovered a total of 3.33 tonnes of cannabis sativa and 10.949kg of psychotropic substances during the period.

In addition to these seizures, the command also confiscated 0.017kg of cocaine, 227.0 litres of skuchies, 11.0 litres of codeine, and 0.129kg of methamphetamine.

Speaking at a press conference held ahead of the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Rabe highlighted the enforcement efforts of the NDLEA in combating drug-related crimes in Ogun State. He noted that 147 suspects (117 males and 30 females) were arrested for various drug-related offences during the five-month period. Among these arrests, 71 cases have been charged to court, 174 cases are pending, and 86 convictions have been secured.

The commander emphasized the theme of this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest In Prevention.” Rabe underscored the importance of prevention-oriented approaches to curb illicit drug use among youths, who are often influenced by peer pressure and the need for social acceptance.

Rabe stated, “Families, schools, religious organizations, and professional bodies need to invest in prevention strategies to deter activities that lead to illicit drug use.”

He further outlined the NDLEA’s proactive measures, including awareness campaigns targeted at schools, community leaders, religious bodies, and political figures across Ogun State. These efforts aim to enhance public awareness and promote community participation in the fight against drug abuse.

“To achieve a safer and more secure environment for residents of Ogun State, prevention efforts must focus on early intervention, identification of at-risk individuals, and comprehensive treatment for those struggling with drug addiction,” Rabe concluded.
