At least nine people have died and 13 others were injured in two separate accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The first accident occurred on Monday night around 9:33 PM near the Ogere area, resulting in seven fatalities and 11 injuries. The second crash happened on Tuesday around 9:30 AM near Kara, leaving two people dead and two others injured.
Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anthony Uga, has urged commuters to report reckless driving by calling the toll-free number 122.
In a statement on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, Florence Okpe, provided details of the incidents. She explained that the Monday night crash involved a Mazda bus (registration number MNY894) and a truck without a number plate. The Mazda bus, traveling at excessive speed, lost control and collided with the truck from behind. The injured were taken to PATMAG Hospital Ogere, while the deceased were sent to the FOS morgue in Ipara.
The statement reads, “The crash occurred at 9:33 PM with 18 people involved, including 15 men and three women. Eleven individuals were injured (nine men and two women), and seven died (five men and two women). The vehicles involved were a truck with no registration number and a Mazda bus MNY894 YN.”
Okpe further explained that the second accident on Tuesday at about 5:30 AM involved a blue Peugeot bus (registration number WRA224XA) and an orange DAF truck (registration number ANC711XA). Both vehicles collided due to excessive speed and loss of control.
She said, “A rescue operation was conducted on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, by the FRSC Ibafo Command at Kara, around 5:30 AM. The crash involved a blue Peugeot bus WRA224XA and an orange DAF truck ANC711XA. Two men were killed, and two others were injured. The injured were taken to the nearest hospital, and the deceased were handed over to their families.”
Uga urged motorists to adhere to speed limits, especially at night and during poor visibility conditions like rain. He sympathized with the families of the victims and advised passengers to remain vigilant and caution drivers who break traffic laws. Uga also encouraged the public to report reckless drivers by calling the toll-free number 122.
