Why Agege Stops School Food Sellers to Prevent Cholera

In an effort to prevent a cholera outbreak, the Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State has suspended food vendors operating in schools. This decision is part of a broader initiative to raise awareness and prevent the disease in the community.
Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, the council chairman, shared this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) last week. Egunjobi mentioned that the council has launched extensive sensitization campaigns, targeting markets and schools through radio broadcasts.
“We have suspended all school food vendors to ensure the safety of pupils and students. We have also advised them, via radio, to bring their own food to school to avoid any risk of cholera,” Egunjobi stated. He emphasized that this measure will help detect and prevent potential outbreaks in the community.
The council has also conducted visits and inspections in schools to ensure that the children are in good health and that the environment is safe. Additionally, market traders have been educated about the importance of maintaining hygiene to prevent the disease.
“We are tirelessly working to prevent a cholera outbreak in our community,” Egunjobi added. “We are using various platforms, including landlord associations, to emphasize the need for proper hygiene in food and drink preparation. We urge residents to follow these precautionary measures to protect against the deadly cholera disease.”
NAN reports that cholera has spread to over 30 states in Nigeria, with Lagos recording 24 deaths from 417 cases.
