A five-storey building owned by former Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha collapsed along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja.

Eyewitnesses reported that the structure, which was undergoing renovation, fell on Tuesday evening. Security operatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command quickly cordoned off the area.

There are concerns that several individuals may be trapped inside the rubble. An eyewitness stated, “There is a possibility that some people could be inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not yet coordinated for efficient operations.”

Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed in a statement that three people were rescued from the collapsed building. The statement read:

“The FCT Police Command hereby confirms that yesterday, July 1, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., there was a building collapse at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street.

“In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams to cordon off the area for possible rescue.

“Three victims were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building and rushed to the hospital for medical care.”

Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue to search for any additional victims.
