Tinubu Concludes Term as ECOWAS Chairman
President Bola Tinubu’s term as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government concludes today (Sunday). The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority is taking place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he will hand over the role to a new leader.
Tinubu was unanimously appointed as chairman in July 2024 during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority held in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.
Throughout his tenure, Tinubu faced significant challenges, particularly dealing with military coups in various member states. Initially, he took a firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, implementing sanctions against these nations. However, these sanctions were eventually lifted as ECOWAS adopted a more peaceful approach to addressing the issues.
