First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged political leaders from all parties in Nigeria to make tangible progress towards gender equity.

She praised the House of Representatives for moving forward with a bill that proposes reserving 70 out of 360 legislative seats for women, which has passed its second reading.

Speaking at the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association’s spotlight initiative at the National Assembly in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need to address and overcome the ongoing gender disparities in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“To fully achieve this, we must be seen to walk the talk,” Tinubu stated. “Constitutional amendments may also be necessary to enshrine gender equity in political representation.”

She expressed her support for the House’s bill to reserve 74 seats for women in the National Assembly as a means to boost female participation in politics and governance.

“I commend the House of Representatives for passing the bill seeking to reserve 74 seats for women in the National Assembly in a bid to encourage more female participation in politics and governance,” Tinubu said.

She also highlighted the gender-friendly nature of the Senate leadership and called on the 10th National Assembly to support women in politics.

“Nigerian women are smart and intelligent and can work alongside our male counterparts, without friction for the good and development of our country,” she concluded.
