Hardship: Details of what Former Governor of Kano State, Shekarau Tells Tinubu to do about his Policies Implemented Affecting Nigerians

A former governor of Kano State has called on the Bola Tinubu-led administration to reassess its policies and acknowledge any mistakes made.

The economic situation in Nigeria has deteriorated due to the subsidy removal policy and the floating of the naira, both enacted by Tinubu’s government. These measures have led to a significant decline in the naira’s value, sparking widespread protests across the country.

Shekarau emphasized that the government should critically review its economic strategies and recognize any errors. “The best learning comes from understanding and correcting your mistakes,” he said during an interview on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*.

He suggested that the government should reflect on areas where errors occurred, identify incorrect policies, and address the resulting crisis of high living costs and inflation, which has surged to 40 percent.

Since President Tinubu announced the removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023, petrol prices have tripled, contributing to soaring inflation. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), inflation reached 34 percent by June 2024, making essential goods unaffordable for many Nigerians.

Despite introducing a new minimum wage law and other measures to mitigate the impact of these economic policies, protests erupted across the country in early August, with demonstrators demanding the reinstatement of fuel subsidies among other changes. Tinubu, however, has maintained that there will be no reversal of the subsidy policy.

Shekarau argued that the Tinubu administration should openly admit to its mistakes and address the issues at hand. “It’s crucial to recognize where things went wrong and take steps to correct them,” he said.
