How Navy Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza Dies While Rescuing 59 from Sinking Vessel

The Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PSNASA) has honored the late Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza of the Nigerian Navy, who sacrificed his life in a dramatic rescue operation.

Gwaza’s bravery was on full display when he led a mission to save 59 people aboard the MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel at risk of sinking in the Niger Delta’s Okpobo field. Despite facing severe conditions, Gwaza ensured the safety of all individuals onboard but tragically lost his own life in the process. His heroic deeds serve as a powerful testament to the dedication and sacrifice of naval and security personnel.
In a statement from Ambassador Mary Abayomi Fatile, PSNASA urged Nigerians to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by security agents like Lt. Commander Gwaza. Ambassador Fatile highlighted the importance of collective acknowledgment for the courage and selflessness demonstrated by these individuals.
“PSNASA deeply mourns the loss of Lt. Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, who gave his life while conducting a rescue operation for a distressed vessel,” the statement read. “Gwaza’s courageous efforts to save the 59 passengers of MV AMBIKA 4, despite perilous circumstances, reflect the highest standards of bravery and commitment.”
The statement continued, “His sacrifice underscores the remarkable dedication of those who serve in our armed forces and security agencies. We must come together as a community to support and appreciate these heroes who risk their lives for our safety.”
PSNASA extended its condolences to Gwaza’s family and called on the public to recognize and value the sacrifices made by such courageous individuals.
