62-Year-Old Arrested for Printing Fake Money
The Bauchi State Police Command has announced the arrest of 62-year-old Tahir Ahmed for allegedly printing counterfeit naira notes.
According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil, the arrest occurred on August 6, 2024. A concerned citizen from Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, reported that Ahmed, who had boarded a commercial Vectra vehicle from Sabon Garin Narabi in Toro LGA, Bauchi State, began exhibiting suspicious behavior during the journey to Bauchi. The vehicle stopped at Tilden Fulani Market in Toro LGA, where Ahmed joined the passengers.
While en route, Ahmed reportedly engaged in what seemed to be ritualistic chanting, during which he purportedly transformed some papers into new N1000 notes. This behavior raised concerns among passengers, who suspected the notes might be counterfeit.
Upon reaching Yandoka Road in Bauchi metropolis, a vigilant individual alerted the police. After interrogation, Ahmed confessed to the crime, and officers recovered N238,000 in suspected fake currency from him.
The investigation is ongoing, with the state Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa Muhammad, directing the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to request a forensic analysis from the Central Bank of Nigeria to verify the authenticity of the notes.
