See what NLC Vow to do if NLC President, Ajaero is Arrested
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its members and all workers nationwide to initiate an economic shutdown if the police arrest the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The police had summoned Ajaero to their headquarters last night for questioning over allegations related to terrorism financing, among other issues. In response, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Labour House, where it was decided to request additional time from the police to consult with legal advisors.
During a briefing at the Labour House, where workers gathered to support Ajaero and accompany him to the police station, NLC Deputy President Kabiru Ado Sani emphasized that the police’s summons was effectively a summons for all workers.
Sani stated, “Our resolution includes our commitment to the rule of law and due process. We will respond to the police invitation, as we are not a faceless organization, but we believe we need more time for legal consultation since the notice was given only yesterday with a 10am deadline today.”
He continued, “We are working with our lawyers to seek an extension, but this does not validate the charges against the Congress leadership. Should our Congress President be arrested or detained, we have instructed our affiliates to prepare for nationwide mobilization. All workers are to suspend their services in response.”
Sani reassured the workers, saying, “This organization belongs to all of us, and we must protect its integrity. We appreciate your solidarity and ask that you remain calm and return to your workplaces while awaiting further instructions.”
He concluded by promising that any updates will be communicated through the leadership, urging everyone to stay patient and attentive for further guidance.
