Reasons we increased Passport fees’

Over 110,000 passports uncollected across Nigeria – Immigration Service

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has explained the reasons for the upcoming adjustment in international passport fees, set to be implemented on September 1, 2024. This adjustment, representing a 42.86% increase, will raise the cost of the 32-page passport booklet with a five-year validity from N35,000 to N50,000, and the 64-page booklet with a ten-year validity from N70,000 to N100,000.

The NIS clarified that applicants residing abroad will not be affected by this fee change. According to the NIS, the fee adjustment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which focuses on enhancing local content. The agency provided four key reasons for the fee hike:

1. To enhance passport quality and ensure it meets International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

2. To address the rising costs of materials and production in the current economic climate.

3. To facilitate the establishment of additional passport offices and biometric centers, improving access, reducing congestion at existing locations, and speeding up passport production.

4. To support the full domestication of passport booklet production in Nigeria.

The NIS emphasized that these measures are crucial for improving the overall efficiency and quality of passpor

t services.
