Obi Condemns Abuse of Free Speech Rights by Security Forces in Nigeria

Peter Obi

The right to free speech is closely tied to the public’s ability to access information about government actions and decisions. Recent abuses by government agents, who are suppressing non-security-related information, highlight the urgent need for the Freedom of Information Bill. It is essential for journalists and the media to keep those in power accountable, especially when there are government overreach or errors.

Investigative journalists are vital for uncovering truths and are protected by laws that ensure freedom of expression in a democracy. It is alarming and unacceptable that Nigerian investigative journalists are facing harassment, abductions, and detentions by government agents. The case of @PIDOMNIGERIA, a journalist who has been missing and detained, is particularly concerning.

Nigerian authorities must be held responsible for his situation and any potential misconduct. Continued suppression of journalists risks transforming Nigeria into a state where press freedom is stifled, and journalists are persecuted for their work.

This is not the Nigeria we aspire to. We demand justice, accountability, and an end to these severe violations of press freedom. We envision a society where citizens can freely express themselves, access non-classified information, and where the government is fully accountable to the people. These principles are fundamental to the new society we seek. -PO
