Yoruba Council Urges Respect for Iyaloja Position Amid Market Disputes

The Yoruba Council Worldwide has emphasized the need for respect towards the Iyaloja stool in Lagos markets, including Computer Village. The council’s President, Oladotun Hassan, addressed journalists at the Ooni of Ife’s palace in Ile-Ife on Wednesday, urging for peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups in Lagos State.

Hassan stressed that maintaining harmony between Yoruba and Igbo traders is essential for avoiding ethnic conflicts. He highlighted that the Iyaloja-General of Lagos, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, should be respected as the traditional leader of Lagos markets, with authority granted by traditional rulers.

He expressed concern over recent allegations of attempts to undermine market authority through misinformation and intimidation. Hassan asserted that sustainable market development relies on peace and mutual respect among all tribes, and that traditional practices associated with the Iyaloja role must be upheld.

The council also called for an end to unauthorized levies on traders and requested Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate these disturbances.

Iyaloja-General of Ile-Oodua, Falilat Lawal, supported the call for unity and respect for the Iyaloja-General of Lagos.

Additionally, the Yoruba Council Worldwide will host the inaugural Yoruba Obas Summit on November 7 at the Obafemi Elegushi Royal Palace in Lagos. The summit aims to address issues related to national development, security, and empowerment for youth and women.
