State Police: Details of Deadline Set by NEC for State Submissions
The National Economic Council (NEC) has set a deadline of September 9, 2024, for all states to decide on the creation of State Police.
This deadline was announced after a meeting led by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Acting Oyo State Governor Bayo Lawal revealed that four states had not yet submitted their reports. NEC has instructed these states to present their positions by Monday.
While the identities of the four states were not disclosed during the briefing, NEC has emphasized that any state failing to submit by the deadline will be bound by the eventual decision made. President Bola Tinubu has previously supported the establishment of state police, as advocated by governors, to address the country’s rising insecurity.
States were tasked with submitting their reports for NEC’s review and action. Following the agreement, 16 governors had already submitted their reports supporting the creation of state police and the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to facilitate this.
Since then, more states have communicated their positions on the matter, leaving only four states yet to submit their reports. Despite the support, the proposal has faced some criticism, particularly regarding potential funding challenges and demands for increased state allocations.
