Details of the Amount US Allocates to IOM for Disaster Relief in Nigeria

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing over $6.5 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to support disaster management efforts in Nigeria, particularly addressing flood-related humanitarian needs.

The announcement, made by the US Embassy in Abuja, reveals that this funding, part of USAID’s Fiscal Year 2024 budget, will empower local partners to tackle the impacts of flooding and other emergencies. IOM will utilize $3 million of this grant to specifically address flood-related issues throughout Nigeria.

Since mid-August, flooding has affected more than 619,000 individuals across 29 Nigerian states, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The floods have resulted in 210 fatalities, displaced nearly 228,700 people, and damaged over 84,800 homes.

This funding is part of a broader humanitarian aid initiative by USAID, which has allocated nearly $100 million in Fiscal Year 2024 to address urgent needs caused by various disasters in Nigeria.

“Our commitment to supporting Nigeria in the face of climate change and frequent natural disasters remains strong. This partnership reflects our long-standing dedication to providing humanitarian assistance across the country,” stated Melissa Jones, USAID Mission Director.
