How Police React to Mob Attack on Couple in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has issued a warning against vigilantism following the mob killing of a couple in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area, on Monday. The Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, emphasized that justice cannot be served through unlawful actions and urged the public to allow the police to handle investigations.
“The police are actively investigating the incident and are committed to apprehending those responsible. It is crucial that any suspects be turned over to law enforcement for proper handling,” Okoye stated.
Reports indicate that the couple, whose identities remain unknown, were burned to death by an angry mob after being caught allegedly stealing a motorcycle. According to local sources, the couple was known in the community but had recently been involved in motorcycle thefts. They were apprehended while attempting to steal another bike on the Orogwe-Ohii Road.
Community members had become increasingly vigilant due to a rise in motorcycle thefts and chose to take matters into their own hands rather than involve the police. The incident has caused many youths in the area to flee out of fear of police action during the ongoing investigation.
