Nigerians Call for Investigation into NDDC’s Alleged Campaign Donations to Okpebholo

Recent allegations have stirred a significant controversy on social media, accusing the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) of allocating N10 billion and 18 trailer loads of rice to support Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election.
The hashtag #ProbeNDDCNow has rapidly gained momentum, with thousands of Nigerians demanding an investigation into the suspected misuse of public funds.
Reports claim that the funds and rice, initially intended for development projects, were redirected to support Okpebholo’s campaign efforts. This revelation has triggered widespread outrage, especially among Edo State residents, who have voiced their frustrations on Twitter and other social media platforms.
One Twitter user expressed dismay: “Our infrastructure is deteriorating, yet NDDC is disbursing N10 billion to APC for elections? This is a betrayal of public trust! #ProbeNDDCNow.”
Another commented, “Funds meant for development are being used to influence votes. This isn’t democracy; it’s corruption! #ProbeNDDCNow.”
NDDC officials, particularly from Edo State, are reportedly upset about the redirection of funds meant for essential infrastructure, such as road repairs, toward political campaigns. There is a strong call for an immediate probe into the commission’s financial dealings.
Social commentator Osazuwa Imafidon shared his concerns on Facebook: “The NDDC’s mandate is to enhance the lives of Niger Delta residents, not to fund political campaigns. We need urgent answers. #ProbeNDDCNow.”
Edo residents have shown resolve not to be influenced by alleged vote-buying, with some advising, “Accept the rice, but vote with integrity.”
The hashtag remains a trending topic, increasing pressure on both the NDDC and the APC to address the allegations. Additionally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing calls to ensure a fair election in Edo State, free from illicit financial influences.
Neither the NDDC nor Senator Monday Okpebholo’s campaign has issued an official response to the allegations yet. Given the rising demand for accountability and transparency, this issue is expected to remain in the spotlight for the foreseeable future.
