Federal Government Reacts to Restricting Under-18s from WASSCE and UTME
The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that there is no ban on students under 18 years old from taking the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.
Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, addressed the issue in Abuja on Friday during a press event marking the 2024 International Literacy Day. He expressed disappointment over the public’s misunderstanding and misinterpretation of comments made by Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman.
Sununu explained that the minister’s remarks were related to the 18-year age requirement for entry into tertiary institutions, as outlined in the 6:3:3:4 education system. The ongoing discussions aim to address this issue, and the National Assembly is also involved in finding a resolution. He highlighted concerns about a university admitting children as young as 10, 11, or 12 years old, which he deemed inappropriate.
While acknowledging that some exceptionally talented students may have advanced abilities at a young age, Sununu emphasized the need for guidelines to identify such individuals without unfairly limiting opportunities for others. He reassured that there is no rule barring students under 18 from sitting for WASSCE, NECO, or similar exams.
On the subject of International Literacy Day, Sununu highlighted the importance of literacy in promoting understanding, peace, and socio-economic development. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling literacy challenges through the Education for Renewed Hope roadmap (2024-2027).
UNESCO’s Country Representative, Diallo Abdourahamane, also emphasized literacy as a fundamental human right essential for creating a just and sustainable society.
