Tinubu Rejects Proposal to Extend Retirement Age for National Assembly Staff

President Bola Tinubu has declined to approve a bill aimed at increasing the retirement age for civil servants in Nigeria’s National Assembly.
The proposed legislation sought to raise the retirement age to 65 years or after 40 years of service, whichever comes first. The president’s rejection was communicated in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a Senate session on Tuesday, though no specific reasons were given.
While praising the Senate for its efforts in crafting and passing the bill, Tinubu noted that, after thorough consultations, he opted not to endorse it. Currently, the law stipulates a retirement age of 60 or after 35 years of service.
The bill had faced initial resistance in February before ultimately being approved, aligning with a similar version from the House of Representatives.
In his letter, Tinubu expressed hope that his decision would be understood and accepted by all stakeholders.
