Nsukka, Enugu State, is in turmoil following the tragic deaths of two individuals, allegedly connected to the infamous Oriokpa masquerades. Reports indicate that the violence has reignited fears regarding the aggressive conduct associated with these traditional figures.

 

Recent Events:

 

– **Aku Road, Obechara**: A woman in her forties was killed by a truck while attempting to escape an Oriokpa masquerade.

– **Nru Junction**: A male student from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, died under mysterious circumstances linked to the masquerades.

 

Context:

 

– **Protests**: On September 19, hundreds of women from the Eha-Alumona community demonstrated against harassment by masquerades.

– **Prior Incidents**: A disturbing video surfaced in April 2024, showing Oriokpa masquerades violently attacking a nurse.

– **Public Reaction**: There has been significant backlash from human rights organizations and the public, calling for accountability and justice.

 

Police Action:

 

The Enugu State Police Command has initiated investigations into the incidents. However, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, was unavailable for comments.

 

As the situation escalates in Nsukka, residents are increasingly demanding effective measures to address the violence attributed to the Oriokpa masquerades.
