Why Divorce Rates Are Rising in Nigeria

Published by on October 8th, 2024.

Why Divorce Rates Are Rising in Nigeria

Nigeria ranks among the countries with the highest divorce rates, as highlighted by recent data from Divorce.com, a U.S.-based platform supporting couples before and after divorce. According to their statistics, Nigeria is 11th on a list of 26 nations with elevated divorce rates, with a rate of 2.9 percent in 2023, equating to 1.8 divorces per 1,000 individuals.

This troubling statistic persists even though both Islam and Christianity strongly oppose divorce. The website points out that in Nigeria, the stability of marriages often hinges on religious beliefs, family dynamics, and cultural traditions. While marriage is highly esteemed, the societal stigma surrounding divorce typically compels individuals to maintain their unions, even amid challenges.

However, societal attitudes are shifting. Many conservative Christians, who traditionally discouraged divorce and promoted reconciliation, are beginning to view it as a preferable alternative to domestic violence and infidelity. Additionally, the issue of bride price complicates matters; in some regions, families may work to prevent a marriage from dissolving to avoid returning significant payments made at the time of the union.

As time progresses, the stigma surrounding divorce has diminished, and the financial independence of women has increased. Many women no longer feel they must endure domestic violence, particularly when it poses severe risks to their physical and mental well-being. Consequently, more women are now willing to pursue divorce as a definitive solution rather than a last resort.

The reality is that marriages often fail because individuals underestimate the effort required to maintain a healthy relationship. While conflict is an unavoidable aspect of any partnership, resolution is always possible. Domestic violence and abuse, however, are unacceptable. Those enduring such treatment should prioritize their safety and well-being, regardless of whether children are involved.

Yet, there are numerous couples who have sustained their relationships for decades. When asked about their longevity, their insights might reveal common themes that are both surprising and enlightening.
