Turkish Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in New York After Pilot Dies Mid-Flight

A Turkish Airlines flight en route to Istanbul was forced to make an emergency landing in New York when the captain passed away during the flight.

The plane, which departed from Seattle on Wednesday, diverted after 59-year-old pilot İlçehin Pehlivan fainted. Turkish Airlines spokesperson Yahya Üstün reported that the crew attempted emergency treatment but were unable to revive him.

“When initial medical assistance was unsuccessful, the cockpit crew, which included one captain and a co-pilot, opted for an emergency landing, but unfortunately, our captain did not survive before reaching the ground,” Üstün explained.

The spokesperson confirmed that Pehlivan had been with the airline since 2007 and had no prior health issues. He had successfully passed a medical examination earlier this year, with no conditions identified that would hinder his ability to work.

“As Turkish Airlines, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our captain and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones,” Üstün added.

Passengers on the flight have been assisted with arrangements to connect to their onward journey to Istanbul from New York.
