Three SuperSport Crew Members Killed in Kidnapping Attack in Anambra

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed its condolences to the families of three media professionals who were killed during a kidnapping ambush in Anambra State.

The victims were part of a SuperSport team traveling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom, to cover the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya, which the Super Eagles won on October 11.

Reports indicate that the crew was ambushed on Tuesday along the Ihiala-Orlu Road while en route from Lagos to Uyo. Armed assailants opened fire on their bus, resulting in the deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and the driver.

Of the 14 individuals on the bus, eight were rescued, two managed to escape, three lost their lives, and one person remains unaccounted for.

In a statement released on Saturday, NFF President Musa Gusau confirmed the tragic incident and extended his sympathies to the families of the victims. He also prayed for the safe return of the missing individual.

Gusau acknowledged SuperSport’s dedication to Nigerian football and their role in bringing joy through the sport. He noted, “While we celebrated our victory against Libya and secured three points, the loss of three lives overshadowed our joy, making this a deeply painful moment.”

He highlighted the long-standing partnership between Nigerian football and SuperSport, commending the broadcaster for its commitment and professionalism.

The NFF’s statement concluded with prayers for the families of the deceased and gratitude for the efforts of security forces in response to the incident.

As of now, SuperSport has not yet released an official statement regarding the tragedy.

SuperSport, a leading sports broadcaster based in South Africa, has been operational since 1988, covering a diverse range of major sporting events and leagues, including football, rugby, cricket, and more.
