Olisa Agbakoba Calls EFCC a “Terrorist Organization”; Give Reasons

Olisa Agbakoba

Prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Olisa Agbakoba, has characterized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a “terrorist organization,” alleging that the agency misuses its authority to instill fear in the populace.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Agbakoba voiced his concerns regarding the EFCC’s operations, highlighting its overlapping duties with other law enforcement agencies.

He questioned the necessity of having multiple agencies like the EFCC, the Special Fraud Unit, and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) performing similar functions without yielding significant results. “Why do we have all these bodies, yet no one is being held accountable?” he asked.

While recognizing some successes of the EFCC, Agbakoba criticized its management of high-profile cases, particularly the treatment of former police officials. “Is it appropriate to drag a former Inspector General of Police in such a manner?” he pondered, indicating that such actions reflect poor judgment.

His most pointed critique was directed at the EFCC’s methods: “These individuals act like terrorists. They intimidate us with their power, creating fear around their name. That’s not the role of a law enforcement agency.”

Agbakoba called on the National Assembly to redefine the EFCC’s responsibilities and implement reforms to ensure the agency operates effectively and justly.
