Defence Headquarters Clarifies: No Acting Chief of Army Staff Appointed; Calls for Military Takeover Are Treasonous
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially stated that there has been no appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), contrary to rumors circulating in certain media outlets. It is important to clarify that no such position has been filled within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
Currently, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja is on his annual leave for 2024. The AFN is functioning efficiently, with all Service Chiefs fulfilling their constitutional duties. Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is providing regular updates to the COAS in line with standard military protocols.
The DHQ urges those spreading unfounded rumors to stop immediately. The COAS is in good health and will return to his duties at the conclusion of his leave.
Media organizations are reminded to verify information with appropriate authorities to avoid disseminating misinformation. The Chief of Defence Staff spoke with the COAS just moments ago.
Furthermore, individuals promoting a military takeover, as seen in a recent viral video, should recognize that such actions are considered treasonous under the Constitution.
The AFN remains committed to upholding and advancing democracy, expressing loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The military is dedicated to its core responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s integrity. The peace currently enjoyed is a testament to the President’s support for the military and the commitment of AFN leadership.
In light of this, the AFN and relevant security agencies are prepared to take action against any individuals or groups advocating unconstitutional changes. The Chief of Defence Staff expresses gratitude to Nigerians for their ongoing support and prayers. Victory is assured.
