Some individuals have even sold their homes, cars, and land, or drained their retirement savings to fund their travel aspirations, only to be deceived by these fraudsters. Many scammers operate without a legitimate business presence, making them difficult to trace.

A recent report highlighted a case where a fake travel agent tricked approximately 166 people in scams totaling around N700 million.

Henry Badejo, a Lagos-based travel agent, warns that while the internet offers valuable resources, it also provides a platform for scammers. He emphasizes the importance of verifying a travel agency’s legitimacy. For instance, if a website lacks a physical address and only provides social media links or phone numbers, proceed with caution.

To help you identify potential scams, here are six tips:

1. Conduct Thorough Research

Before choosing a travel agency, ensure you conduct extensive research to confirm its legitimacy. Look for established agencies with physical offices, professional websites, and reliable contact information. Reading customer reviews and testimonials can provide insight into the agency’s reputation.

2. Meet in Person

Samuel Udoh, a travel consultant, advises against relying solely on phone conversations. Arrange an in-person meeting to assess the agent’s credibility. If they are hesitant to meet or only want to meet in a public place without documentation, this could be a warning sign. Genuine travel agents are usually open to face-to-face discussions.

3. Verify Licenses

Ensure that the travel agent is registered with relevant governmental bodies and industry organizations. Check for membership in respected associations like the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies and confirm they possess a valid license from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority or other regulatory agencies.

4. Be Wary of Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers

Badejo cautions against agents offering deals that seem excessively low or come with irresistible discounts. Research typical travel package costs to help identify suspicious offers and protect yourself from fraud.

5. Watch for Ethical Red Flags

Avoid agents who suggest dishonest practices, such as misleading immigration officials or unconventional travel methods. Legitimate agents adhere to ethical standards and would never request payments for fraudulent documents.

6. Avoid Full Upfront Payments

Be cautious of agencies demanding full payment upfront. Legitimate agents typically require only a deposit to secure your booking, with the remaining balance due once all arrangements are finalized.
