Reuben E. Brigety II, the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, has announced he will step down from his position on January 10, 2025, in line with standard protocol following a change in U.S. presidential administration.
In a statement released on Monday, Brigety confirmed his decision, saying, “I have informed the Government of South Africa that I will resign as U.S. Ambassador to South Africa effective January 10, 2025, as is customary during a transition between administrations.”
He expressed his deep appreciation for his role, noting, “It has been a great honor to serve in this capacity and to help nurture the strong ties between the United States and South Africa. U.S. ambassadors serve at the discretion of the President, and with the recent election, the American people have voiced their choice for the country’s future direction, reinforcing our shared commitment to democratic ideals.”
Brigety highlighted several accomplishments during his tenure, including progress in areas such as trade, global health, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
“As I near the end of my service, I am incredibly grateful to the Government and people of South Africa for their warm hospitality and unwavering partnership,” he said. “I also want to extend my sincere thanks to my team at the U.S. Mission for their dedication to advancing our shared goals and for fostering an environment of respect and support.”
He concluded by expressing confidence in the continued growth of the U.S.-South Africa relationship, adding, “I know the Mission will build on the solid foundations we have established together, and I am certain that our partnership will continue to flourish.”
