See Reasons Inspector General of Police Urges Nigerians to Report Police Misconduct Through Official Channels, Not Social Media

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called on Nigerians to stop using social media to report police misconduct and instead utilize the Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU) for such grievances. Speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, the IG stressed that social media often spreads misinformation, which can harm the reputation of the police force.

 

“We urge the public to avoid reporting police behavior on social media platforms. Instead, please direct your complaints to the Police Complaints Response Unit,” Egbetokun said. He emphasized that this official channel offers a more organized and accountable way to handle complaints.

 

While acknowledging the influence of social media in shaping public views, Egbetokun cautioned that unverified information can lead to false narratives. He reaffirmed the commitment of the police force to transparency and accountability, highlighting the critical role the media plays in promoting these values.

 

“I am honored to address this conference, which is part of our ongoing efforts in police reform. It is an essential step in building public trust and respect for the police,” he added.
