Oshiomhole Opposed Son’s Nomination as Commissioner, Says Edo Deputy Governor

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has disclosed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole opposed the nomination of his son, Cyril Oshiomhole, for the position of Commissioner for Health.

Governor Monday Okpebholo had appointed Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as Commissioner for Health-designate last Tuesday, according to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

In an interview on Channels Television, Idahosa defended Cyril’s appointment, describing him as a highly qualified medical doctor. He emphasized that Cyril’s qualifications—gained from both Nigeria and the United States—made him well-suited for the role.

“Senator Adams Oshiomhole is a prominent figure in Nigeria, but his son, like anyone else, has his own path. Cyril is a seasoned doctor, trained locally and internationally, and fully qualified for the position. His father’s influence does not undermine his merit for this role,” Idahosa explained.

Refuting accusations of nepotism, Idahosa stressed that the former APC National Chairman had actually opposed his son’s appointment.

“Oshiomhole himself was against Cyril’s nomination. He opposed it because the governor’s vision for Edo State is based on merit, not family ties. The decision was made because Cyril is competent, not because of his father’s legacy,” he clarified.

Responding to comparisons to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s concerns about state capture, Idahosa stated, “What is happening in Edo is not state capture. This is about ensuring the right people are in the right positions to serve the people effectively.”

On his duties as deputy governor, Idahosa added, “While the governor and I discuss cabinet matters, my primary responsibility is overseeing the Boundary Commission, which I chair.”
