A lawyer and activist, Barrister Mike Ofikwu, was tragically shot and killed by unidentified assailants in Otukpo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, 20 November 2024. A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to our correspondent in Makurdi that Ofikwu was attacked at his residence on Otukpa Street, Otukpo.

Sources close to the scene mentioned that the lawyer was targeted shortly after he returned home. As he attempted to enter his house, two armed men approached him and opened fire. Despite being quickly rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the event and extended condolences to the bereaved family. She assured the public that an investigation was underway.

In a statement, Anene expressed her sympathy, saying, “We confirm the incident and are actively investigating. Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and we are committed to ensuring justice is served.”
