See the Number and Reasons of Inmates Ogun Chief Judge Grants Amnesty to

Mosunmola Dipeolu, the Chief Judge of Ogun State, has granted amnesty to 14 inmates as part of ongoing efforts to alleviate overcrowding in the state’s correctional facilities.

Speaking in Abeokuta on Friday, Dipeolu explained that the pardoned inmates had been held for years, facing charges such as rape, armed robbery, and kidnapping. She emphasized that the pardon reflects the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, ensuring fairness, and promoting rehabilitation within the justice system.

“The amnesty process is an important tool in reviewing cases, accelerating justice, and reintegrating individuals who have endured long periods of pre-trial detention,” Dipeolu said. “It also serves to ease the burden on our overcrowded correctional centers.”

She acknowledged the significant challenges within the justice system, particularly overcrowding in prisons and delays in court proceedings. “These issues demand urgent attention and innovative solutions, such as periodic jail delivery exercises, non-custodial sentences for minor offenses, and restitution to victims,” Dipeolu noted.

The Chief Judge highlighted that the amnesty process is an essential part of her constitutional responsibilities and an effort to identify inmates who have been detained for extended periods or suffer from severe health conditions. “This initiative allows us to review cases and identify those ready for release, ensuring justice and addressing prolonged detentions,” she added.

Dipeolu also stressed that the goal is not just to punish but to promote the reintegration of inmates back into society. She urged the freed individuals to use their second chance wisely and avoid engaging in criminal activities that could return them to prison.

This amnesty is another step toward improving the state’s justice system and ensuring that individuals are not unfairly held in detention beyond the legally mandated time frames.
