See Reasons Telcos Propose 100% Tariff Increase, Await NCC’s Decision on Approval

Nigerian telecom operators have submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) requesting a 100% increase in their service tariffs.
In a recent interview with Arise TV on Thursday, MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, explained that the proposed tariff hike is aimed at addressing the growing operational challenges, including inflation and rising costs associated with service delivery.
Toriola, however, expressed some doubt regarding the likelihood of the NCC approving such a significant increase.
He emphasized that the decision to raise tariffs was driven by the need to maintain the industry’s sustainability in the face of mounting financial pressures due to escalating operational expenses.
“We have submitted requests for tariff hikes of up to 100% to the regulators,” Toriola confirmed. “However, I’m not sure they will approve such a drastic increase, given the current economic situation.”
Despite these concerns, Toriola expressed confidence that all stakeholders, including policymakers, regulators, and the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, are united in their commitment to tackling key issues in the sector.
He added, “We all share common concerns, particularly about human rights, which are essential to driving any economy. Without a sustainable telecommunications industry, the broader economy and the well-being of the people will be severely impacted.”
