Federal Government Responds to Emir Sanusi’s Remarks: Focus on National Progress Over Personal Interests

The Federal Government has taken note of recent comments made by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding the economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration during a public event in Lagos. While the Emir acknowledged the importance of these reforms, he expressed reservations about supporting the government’s efforts, citing personal reasons for not offering his approval.
While we respect the right of every Nigerian, including the Emir, to express their opinions—whether supportive or critical—we find it concerning that a leader from an institution known for upholding integrity and justice would publicly admit to withholding constructive feedback based on personal interests rather than the greater good.
It is important to recognize that Nigeria is at a critical point where bold reforms are necessary to address deep-rooted economic challenges. The changes being implemented by this administration are not merely for convenience, but are crucial steps towards ensuring Nigeria’s long-term growth and stability, goals which Emir Sanusi has consistently supported in the past.
The temporary difficulties arising from these reforms, as acknowledged by Sanusi, are an inevitable outcome of years of mismanagement, but they are essential for the future of Nigeria. These changes are already showing positive results: the unification of exchange rates has increased investor confidence, bolstering foreign reserves and enhancing Nigeria’s resilience against external economic shocks. The removal of the fuel subsidy has redirected significant funds into key sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Projections from reputable global organizations, including the World Bank, indicate that Nigeria’s economy is on a recovery path with rising GDP. Moreover, reforms have reduced the country’s debt service-to-revenue ratio, strengthening the fiscal foundation for future generations.
It is disheartening that reforms, widely recognized as critical by global experts—including Emir Sanusi—are now being subtly criticized due to personal shifts in allegiance. As someone with expertise in economics, Emir Sanusi has a responsibility to contribute to the national discourse in a way that advances collective progress, rather than undermining reforms due to perceived political or personal differences.
We urge the Emir to set aside personal interests and political biases in favor of the broader objective of improving the lives of Nigerians.
Rebuilding Nigeria demands a unified effort, focus, and sacrifice from all sectors of society. We call on leaders to avoid rhetoric that erodes public trust and instead join in the shared mission of achieving a prosperous Nigeria. Now, more than ever, the country needs cooperation, not divisive commentary.
The Tinubu administration remains committed to steering Nigeria towards inclusive growth, sustainability, and shared prosperity. The challenges before us are significant, but with unity and collective action, we are confident in our ability to overcome them. This administration welcomes constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, while prioritizing the needs and well-being of Nigerians.
Let history reflect this moment as a turning point, where leaders and citizens come together to place the nation’s future above personal gain. Together, we will fulfill the promise of a renewed and prosperous Nigeria for all.
